Hutch the Rescue Dog
Meet our very special hero, Hutch the rescue dog.
“In October 2023, he was found dumped on the side of the road inside a box in Detroit with his 4 other siblings at only 8 weeks old. The rescue we volunteer for picked them up to get them medical attention as they were very sick and emaciated. Come to find out he was completely blind and diagnosed with Hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain). The prognosis for a puppy with hydrocephalus is usually not good, if they make it to 6 months you are very lucky.
We started fostering him immediately as he needed around the clock care. They noticed some neurological deficits along with his blindness, but we were hoping he could beat the odds stacked against him. At this point we decided he needed a strong name, a name that showed resilience, perseverance, and GRIT. We thought what better name than Hutch and representing a team that has persevered and been resilient, the Detroit Lions!
He started his mission once he passed the 6 month mark which is to bring attention to special needs children and the adoption of special needs dogs through inclusion, his love for football and the Detroit Lions. Show people that we are not different, we just have special abilities.
He has visited several elementary schools and high schools visiting classrooms of children with and without special needs and has visited the pediatrics unit at Royal Oak Beaumont hospital to bring some holiday cheer to the patients. He attends sporting events with Unified Sports which joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team :) He also spends his Saturday’s taking shelter dogs out to help get them adopted. It builds their confidence as well as his!”
We met Hutch and his family at training camp over the summer and we are so inspired by their story and their cause. They are incredible examples of what it means to have an empathetic, charitable heart even in the midst of your own challenges—that’s why he’s our hero.
Love Always,
Team Hutch
